Season 1 finale of Parish, i.e episode 6 is titled “A Good Man” and features a lot of plotlines come together. Gray finally finds the person who killed his son, but will his revenge bring him peace? The Tongais were slipping towards the conclusion of episodes 4 and 5, but it seems like they are back in business. Or are they? The season hadn’t been all that pleasing, and sans episode 5, the show had been pretty standard. The setup for season 2 doesn’t feel earned, and I don’t think I would like to return to Parish’s ground again. However, angry and lost Giancarlo Esposito without any more ties to the family might just be interesting to witness.

Anyway, let’s examine the final episode of Season 1 of Parish in detail. Please be aware of potential spoilers.

Parish (Season 1 Finale), Episode 6 Recap:

After the previous episode’s ending, we know that Horse will cut a deal with Gray by fueling his revenge. Gray is mad that Horse has been sitting on the recording for all this while, but he never cared to share it with him. Horse says that he only recently acquired it when Gray did the job for him. Along with the passports, the bag, which inadvertently belonged to Anton, also had this recording, possibly to bait Gray for it. Gray is angry and wants to know who that man is in the recording, but of course, Horse would want something in return. While the opening exchange doesn’t show us what Horse wants, we can guess that it has something to do with Anton.

We also briefly see Gray visiting Sister Anne at her congregation in spite of her warning him not to. He tells her that he has finally gotten close to having justice for his son’s death, and in spite of how it sounds to God or to people on the sidelines, he’s going to do it. He then goes to Colin to make him listen to the recording. In spite of Colin warning him to go to the police with the evidence instead of doing it himself, Gray is adamant and asks him to make a call for him.

Who is Hector?

I guess Colin finally made that call after all. Gray is next seen in an antique shop talking to a guy named Hector. Hector seems to be an old acquaintance because he is not pleased to see Gray. He tells him that he shouldn’t get back into the old ways because he will be forced to call the people up above him. When Gray tells him that he is not scared of ‘Anton’ and is only there to know about the man who killed his son, Hector tells him that he is not talking about ‘Anton’ but the man in Chicago.

Who is this person in Chicago? Well, the season does not address that and leaves it open for a possible second season. I am assuming someone who handles all these shady dealings, some of which consult political inclinations, will be the head honcho.

What is the connection between Laura and Anton?

We saw Laura, the contesting candidate for Attorney General, whom we met in the last episode. Anton was present at her brief, and for a second, we thought, why would Anton be interested in someone contesting for the likes of supporting immigration? Episode 6 of Parish, among many things, establishes that all these people have no conscience, even those who are immigrants themselves. The Tongais and Laura are just fighting the big fight and surviving to stay on top in America.

Thus, we see Anton coming to meet Laura, and even though she feels like a confident person who wants to do good, we see that she is indebted to Anton. The funding for her election is coming directly from him and the many businesses he runs, and we can gauge the hypocrisy of the system once again. He just wants her to get elected and create more need for his services.

What happens to Nyasha Mambo?

Nyasha Mambo, the immigrant girl who was forced to take up a client for sexual favors in the previous episode, can be seen distressed by the treatment she was met with by her own people. She did not come to America to live in the conditions that were given by the Tongais, nor did she wish to use her body to make a living. So, when Zonzo’s men are rounding up the workers for the day, she makes sure she finds a way to escape and runs away with the men, trying to find her everywhere.

Why does Shamisho offer the passports that they had acquired to Anton?

Later, we see Shamisho having a bit of a tiff with Zenzo as to how they should run things now that Horse is at large. She says that she will be doing her side of the work and then meets up with Anton, who is in the secluded junkyard where we first met him.

She hands over all the passports that they had acquired from the heist that Gray did to Anton. The reason for doing this is unclear, but I am assuming Baba, the Tongai siblings’ father, had a prior arrangement with Anton that Horse tried to meddle with. The handling also explains that Shamisho was just posing to be in support of Zenzo while she has been planning something else with Horse all this while. We get a sense that something big is in the works, and all of it is going to go down the same night.

Who is Travis?

Anyway, I guess Hector did give Gray what he wanted because next, we see him tailing a guy named Travis. When he is outside his house, we see Travis bidding goodbye to a little girl. It’s obvious to make the connection that Travis is connected to Laura, as we later learn in the episode. But Gray is interested in none of that, at least not right away, as we see him following Travis to an AA meeting.

Gray slips inside, packing a gun, and sits down for the meeting. He spills his story, and Travis gets a little emotional and goes out for a smoke. Gray puts his gun against him and asks him to get into his car. He then takes him to his office place and questions him for doing what he did to his son. Travis tells Gray that he was in a really bad phase in his life. Since he had consumed some pills on top of drinking to his heart’s extent, he got confused when he saw the kid cloying with his car and, in haste, chose to fire his gun. He also left him there and did not go to the police because he had called his ex-wife Laura (see the connection I was talking about), who had called Anton for help.

So, basically, it was Anton who was responsible for the coverup about his son’s death, not allowing Gray and his family the much-needed justice and closure they needed. Travis tells him that Anton used his truck and crushed it in order to remove any kind of trace back to him. After learning this, Gray gets even more angry but leaves Travis.

What does Gray do to Anton?

Fueled by revenge and being betrayed for so long, Gray removes traces of any of his identity from one of his cars and tracks Anton back to the junkyard. He is currently exchanging the bag of documents that Shamisho gave him with some people. So, he waits patiently for them to leave, and when Anton is about to start his car and leave, he drives right into him at top speed. He then shifts the gears back and ramps into his car yet again. Anton is surprised by such an attack and begs Gray to leave him alone, claiming that there’s more to his son’s killing than what he has heard from the Tongais, but Gray doesn’t listen, letting his car explode, essentially killing him.

What happens at the meeting with Vernon?

At the meeting, Shamisho offered Vernon a deal to handle his workforce with the people they had secured. Vernon, who owns a casino, needs labor that should now be well-documented with a visa. However, he is not interested in Shamisho’s offer, possibly because he has a deal with Anton. But, when Horse, who was presumed to be dead, shows up and Anton doesn’t, Vernon is cornered and is forced to seal a deal with the Tongais, especially when they have a secret video of him having sex with Nyasha.

Parish (Season 1 Finale), Episode 6 Ending Explained:

What happens to Zenzo?

Now, after Gray is done with Anton, I am assuming that one of the other things he instructed Gray to do was kill Zenzo, as you can hear Horse and Shamisho being pretty sure about doing business together without him. However, Gray, who has had enough of everyone else’s tricks, traps the siblings together in their own office and leaves a gun for them to do their own dirty work.

Now, the ending of Parish’s season 1 finale, episode 6, leaves many loose ends, setting up a follow-up season 2. Since AMC hasn’t renewed the show yet, we can only assume that there will be one.

Since the ending of Parish Season 1 Finale finds Shamisho welcoming her father to America alone, one of the other Tongai siblings – Zenzo or Horse, is dead from the gunshot we heard. Since both Shamisho and Horse wanted Zenzo dead, I am assuming that they teamed up and killed him. Their father (letting this cameo be a good surprise) is adamant about knowing the man who destroyed their family.

We see Nyasha, who was on the run, reaching a local police station. This means that things wouldn’t be as easy as they have been for the Tongais anymore until, of course, they dig into their contact with the government itself.

Travis, after his meeting with Gray, decides to give himself up to the police for killing Gray’s son. We also see Gray calling up Laura from Anton’s cellphone, letting her know that he is aware of what she did.

The police show up at Colin’s boat, and we learn that he has been working with them to bring down the Tongais. He claims that Gray has done their work, but the police leave him by saying that they are just getting started with him. They possibly point at them using Colin to bring down the bigger players like the ones that Hector talked about.

Who does Hector call, and what’s next for Gray?

As far as Gray is concerned, we see him rushing back to the motel to the rest of his family. However, Rose and Mak are nowhere to be seen. Since they had warned Gray about jeopardizing the family by getting back to the criminal ways, they must have had it and gone away for their own good.

Now, all alone and with nothing else to do, we see Gray going back to his garage and taking the car that he brought together with his son. It feels like he has had a kind of rebirth of sorts, so when he drives out towards the city, we can think that ‘The Driver’ is back in business and is possibly going towards the ‘man in Chicago,’ the one that Hector calls towards the end of the Parish season 1 finale.
