Perry Mason (Season 2), Episode 6 Recap:
The previous episode ended with Perry (Matthew Rhys) coming back to his apartment to find a toy train all set up and running. It was clear that someone had broken in. So, Perry does not want to take any more risks. He puts a firm lock on his main door and then climbs down from the backdoor. He locks that too. Maybe now that he has to care for more than himself, he is worried about this extra security.ย
Why does Milligan not call his three witnesses in court?
Later in the courtroom, prosecutor Thomas Milligan (Mark OโBrien) tries to prove how the Gallardo brothers could have never gotten hold of the coin any other way than stealing. It is a clear case of character assassination, and Milligan passionately fights it to give a boost to his career. He benefits from the racial prejudices of the judge and the public by showing the brothers in a negative light.ย
Anyhow, after this witness, he suddenly decides not to let his next three witnesses speak that day. But why? Perry and Della (Juliet Rylance) wonder. Maybe it was just to misdirect the defense council. Maybe it is not to let the defense use any witnesses for their benefit. Milligan seems particularly scared of how Perry manages to sway the juryโs opinion. So he may not want to take such a risk.
Who broke into Perryโs apartment?
While walking out of the courtroom, Della sees that Perry is still hung up on who left the train set in his apartment. Paul believes that Lydell McCutcheon (Paul Raci) must have sent someone. However, it was his old pal, Pete Strickland (Shea Whigham), sent by Milligan to snoop on and terrorize him. Pete arrives at Perryโs house again that day and gets hurt while breaking the additional lock. Since Pete does not find anything substantial, Milligan incites Pete to prove he is smarter than Perry.ย
Meanwhile, another pair of friends seem to have become distant because of this case. Della approaches Hamilton Burger (Justin Kirk), hoping to see if he is okay and to talk if he is pressured into getting any specific verdict. Hamilton refuses her request to meet or to have any such conversation. So, while Dellaโs hunch seems closer to the truth, she has no way to find out about it, at least from Hamilton.ย
On the other hand, Paul (Chris Chalk) tries to hire his unemployed brother-in-law for some quick money. At the time, Morris (Jon Chaffin) was wasting his time watching two Serbian fighters wrestle and betting on them. Paul offers a better way to earn money. He asks Mo to sit in his car in a corner, looking for a drug addict in a fancy blue car. The same thing that Paul learns from Ozzy at Perkinsโ establishment. Paul asks Morris to write every single detail he notices during those hours.ย
Back in Perryโs office, Detective Holcomb (Eric Lange) arrives before he shows up. Paul subpoenaed him earlier due to his relation to Brooks and the gambling ship. Perry and Holcomb both see a guy fixing the door lock. Holcomb suggests Perry should get a double-cylinder lock, which requires a key on both sides of the door. At that very moment, he warns Perry to be more cautious about security since he is fighting a tycoon of McCutcheonโs stature.ย
Holcomb wants to get off Perryโs witness list. His relation to Brooks and the world of gambling would put his career and his family at risk. So, he asks for a bargain deal. He believes that Perry wants to malign Brooksโ image and, thus, offers to show some dirt he found on Brooks. However, that offer does not satisfy Perry. He asks for insurance. What he gets are the documents from San Haven โ the place Noreen Lawson (Danielle Gross) currently resides.
Late at night, Camilla Nygaard (Hope Davis) calls Perryโs office. Della picks up the phone and gets invited to Camillaโs palace. She drives there to find Camillaโs fake husband walking away to his real wife. Della walks in and takes two glasses of alcohol to Camilla’s room. They speak without speaking. The subtext is clear to both. But a stranger who may overhear their dialogue would learn hardly anything.ย
Camilla asks whether Della is happy working for Perry or whether she would love to work for her instead. She also gets her opinion on whether she should fire the man who just walked out. Della alerts her about the secrets that he might know about her and reveal to the world. Alas, she leaves this hush-hush conversation without acting on any sexual provocations from Camilla.ย
Meanwhile, Paul goes on a date night with Clara (Diarra Kilpatrick). She is happy that they will get to spend some time alone. Suddenly, Paul notices a boy with some Converse sneakers walking past them. Clara expects Paul to focus on their date instead of his investigation, at least for the night. But Paul gets angry at her. Maybe he is a little too involved in this case, and it also becomes evident a bit later.ย
Mo returns home after spending a few hours on a city corner, noting down the carโs license plates that pass by. Being a rookie, he does not show any dedication to this work. Paul gets angry since it delays learning about it. At the time, even Clara takes Moโs side instead of his. It hurts Paul even more. Clara questions him whether he is taking it a little too far with this investigation. He cannot respond anything to her.
The next day, Perry and Della go through the San Haven file Holcomb shares. Della tells Perry to use a way to make the female jurors buy into his argument. He lets her suggestion pass by. That’s when Ginny Aimes (Katherine Waterston) walks into his office. Della calls her โtasty.โ Perry does not know how to react to this compliment. However, Ginny does.ย
She overhears it and tells Perry, during their date, that she likes it. Then she asks whether he and Della were ever romantically involved. Perry laughs at this question and says they both are different. It seems like Perry is aware of Della’s sexual orientation but prefers to keep it hidden from Ginny and the rest of the world.
What was Lydell trying to hide about his family?
The next day, in the courtroom, the defense council brings Vincent Taylor to the confession stand. Perry tries to bring out what Vincent is hiding behind his earlier testimony, saying Noreen got hurt due to an accident. But Perry fights in his usual style, which does not make Vincent come clean. Then Della asks to approach the witness herself. She brings up the evidence one after the other, from Noreenโs current residence to Brooksโ belt mark, to make Vincent feel guilty for not standing up for his sister, who went through gruesome strangulation.ย
Dellaโs practical experiment to literally show the belt around her neck solidifies that guilt. Vincent confesses that Noreen was, in fact, hurt by getting strangled. Dellaโs powerful testimony makes the female jurors buy into her point firmly and consider Brooks as a not-as-innocent-as-they-thought individual. While all the people stand up to leave the courtroom, Lydell sits in his chair, astonished by the fact that this truth got out. It looks like it is at least one of the things he was trying to hide about Brooks to save his familyโs public image.ย
On the other hand, this triumphant moment makes Della feels buoyed. She calls Anita (Jen Tullock) and accepts her earlier invitation to move to her place with all her things. Back home, she parts ways with her old partner and decides to begin this new life. Meanwhile, in the jail, Raphael (Fabrizio Guido) looks at Dellaโs win to solidify their innocence. Mateo (Peter Mendoza) wants him to be cautious about what he says in jail. A guard, meanwhile, overhears their dialogue and starts senselessly beating Raphael.ย
Perry rides his motorbike up to a nearby beach to meet Detective Holcomb. Holcomb shows him how there was more than just food being brought into the city. Perry brings back a box full of rotten fruits with oil on them. He believes that Lydell was covering up this particular scandal and wasn’t trying to protect his family name. Della sees that Perry is being delusional, trying to find things at places, knowing that they should focus somewhere else. Still, Perry firmly believes it is integral to their case. Was it just a way for Perry to be blindsided? Maybe.ย
Perry Mason (Season 2), Episode 6 Ending Explained:
The next day at the trials, Milligan asks for a sidebar. He tells the judge that Perry has kept the murder weapon inside his office locker. The judge considers it his duty to take a tour of his office and check it right away. With two officers, Della, Perry, Milligan, and Hamilton, the judge walks into the office.ย
Perry opens the locker, and an officer finds the gun that Della kept inside the locker. Milligan gets a victorious smile on his face. Seems like his plan is to one up on Mason and will be considered a messiah for justice. He asks for a mistrial and to get Perry arrested for concealing the evidence, all the while grinning about winning the case than doing what is just.ย
Who broke into Perryโs office?
Once the officers leave, Della tries to find ways to still fight against the mistrial. Perry, however, contemplates who broke into their office. He asks Della whether she said anything to Anita about the case. He asks the same to Paul about Clara. They both say they did not say a single word about it. Then Perry starts thinking about whether he shared anything himself. He rushes out of the room, looks at the in-and-out record, and then notices something in particular.
The next thing we see, Perry barges into Ginnyโs house, accusing her of eavesdropping on them when she came to the office. He believes she leaked information about the gun. Ginny gets emotional for being utterly unsure of how to process what Perry is implying. While Perryโs delusion makes him think it is Ginny, it seems more of Peteโs work for Milligan or maybe Holcombโs attempt while misdirecting Perry to some loose end about oil dealing.
Does Paul find anything about a drug dealer with sneakers?
Instead of Mo, Paul drives up to the corner to keep a watch himself. He notices a car parked on the side with flashlights on. The guy with sneakers was right next to that car. Paul starts driving to catch him. Unfortunately, the guy runs away the moment he sees Paul. By the time he returns, the car also drives away. As a result, Paulโs search, unfortunately, reaches a dead-end.
