Satria Dewa: Gatotkaca (2022) ‘Netflix ‘Movie Ending, Explained: Here is an Indonesian film that builds on the story of an Indian epic. Even before you expect a nuanced and original take to shape the first installment of what will most possibly carry on as a franchise, the first Indian reference comes in Satria Dewa: Gatotkaca in the comment made by a professor named Arya who says he once met a Kaurava’s gene in India, who was a very old man indeed. That old man could “take his own kidney without any procedure just to sell it.” For whatever reason that context serves in the film is still another problem but I dare not take this statement seriously.
That’s not to take away the credibility from the film directed by Hanung Bramantyo that is following the same line of fascination with Hindu mythology, like the big-budget Brahmฤstra Part One: Shiva which was released this year. What it does take away immediately is the viewer’s attitude towards the film. Even Brahmฤstra had to face severe trolling due to its childish dialogues. Satria Dewa: Gatotkaca is also the first production of the Satria Dewa studio, and follows the similar trope of a poor protagonist who finds within him supernatural powers to fight the evil forces that wreak havoc on the land and its people.
Rizky Nazar leads as the good-willed Yuda, alongside a cast that includes Aghniny Haque, Fedi Nuril, Omar Daniel, Cecep Arif Rahman, and Yasmin Napper. If you dived into the world of Satria Dewa and felt that the ending was a little open-ended, you’re definitely not alone. The film surely leaves out clues that will be taken over in the second installment of the franchise, and constantly reminds us that there is more to come. Let us dive into the ending of Satria Dewa for a detailed analysis of that ending.
If you haven’t seen the film, reading ahead can ruin your experience as the piece contains massive spoilers. Let us begin!
Satria Dewa: Gatotkaca Plot Summary And Movie Synopsis
Satria Dewa: Gatotkaca follows the young and dependable Yuda (Rizky Nazar), who is facing a hard time handling his mother’s memory loss and constant fits. They live in a rented house together in the present city of Astinapur where the landlord gives him three days to return the entire rent amount or find another stay. But, Yuda is embroiled in an unexpected tragedy when he accompanies his longtime friend Erlangga to the graduation ceremony where he is killed by otherworldly forces. He falls down on stage after a black current-like stream strikes him from somewhere backstage.
Yuda follows the track and finds out that there is a black-masked killer who is on some kind of hunt. His college professor, wheelchair-bound (don’t ask why), informs him that there is a form of evil that claims the pure forces in order to destroy the breed of Pandavas. Erlangga might be linked to it in some way so he was sacrificed so mercilessly. He informs Yuda about the distinction between the Pandavas and the Kauravas, as well as how the generation follows from both of them trying to claim the throne.
The Kauravas want to claim by force and power, but there is a hidden motive behind all this that they ought to discover. Yuda is stunned at the revelation but it also dawns upon him that in his childhood he witnessed his mother getting assaulted by the evil forces in order to protect him. Where will he find these forces now? What do the Kauravas want?ย
Yuda is aided by Agni in his mission to unearth the truth. In Erlangga’s house, they find a code to meet at a local cafe hidden in the book in his library. In the meantime, Yuda’s mother has vanished, and in her search, Yuda reaches his home in the woods that they had abandoned long ago. There Yuda finds his mother badly injured, and the same black force confronts him. Before succumbing to the wounds, Yuda’s mother tells him that the Brajamusti is hidden in his brother’s grave which he needs to fight the evil forces.
Yuda digs out the umbilical cord from the ground where he finds the Brajamusti, and with the aid of his friends and Agni, regains his power as one of the last forces of the Pandavas. He is Gatotkaca, and his mission is to save the earth and his people from the Kauravas who are wreaking havoc on this earth. He has to reach the Patal Dimension (again, don’t ask why) to unearth the force behind the destruction, but before that Yuda has to face a lot of challenges, overcome twists of fate and trust his companions for support. How will Yuda be able to reach the Patal Dimension? Will he be able to destroy the evil forces of Kauravas? Satria Dewa Gatotkaca moves forward with Yuda’s quest for revenge and reinforcement of good over evil. It might seem like a lot of stories to digest in one go, but if you stick with the film- it does get better.
Satria Dewa: Gatotkaca Movie Ending Explained
What Happens to Agni? Are There More Kauravas?
The end of Satria Dewa: Gatotkaca is filled with clues that tell us that there will be a follow-up of this story to deal with the divide between Pandavas and Kauravas. The references to Mahabharatha here are intricately alluded to, although the battle between good versus evil remains fundamental. Before killing the treacherous follower that is Kaurava, Yuda is told that this is not the end. If he thinks that by killing him all is over then he is wrong. There are hundreds of Kauravas, even thousands, that he has no idea of.
This open-ended clue is more than enough to tell us that Yuda has to unearth the legacy of the Kauravas in order to find their history and only then can he stop them from doing more harm. Until then, there is no end. As Agni returns back to her home, she is surrounded by a hoard of people dressed in black. We see the same suitor Agni’s father had arranged for her. Agni is informed that her father figure has been replaced by someone she should know.
A figure comes out from behind, and gives the following introduction: “I’m the son of Sage Drona (modeled after Dronacharya), the descendant of Kunti, my sister in the arm.” Agni realizes that he is none other than Aswatama. This only means that Yuda would now have to fight the entire army of Aswatama, who will prove his power over the city of Astinapura. In the meantime, how will be able to save Agni entrapped in their den? Will she be turned into a Kauravas? We can only wait till the next installment of Satria Dewa to find out how the story moves forward.
