Johansson is officially making her feature directorial debut in the upcoming drama film titled “Eleanor the Great.” According toย Variety, the actress is all set with the development of the film, as she has sorted the most crucial elements for the film. These crucial elements are the first four actors finalized, who will be joining the film. The cast so far finalized includes the Oscar-nominated actor of “Nebraska,” June Squibb, who will be playing the titular character of Eleanor Morgenstein. This will mark Squibb’s second recent starring role, following the upcoming comedy film “Thelma,” which had its world premiere at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival.
The rest of the cast includes Chiwetel Ejiofor, Broadway veteran Jessica Hecht, and Erin Kellyman. The details about the characters played by these actors are not yet revealed. However, this will mark the reunion of Hecht and Scarlett Johansson, as they have previously worked together in the 2010 Broadway revival of “A View from the Bridge.”
Directed by Johansson, the film is penned by Tory Kamen, which was initially titled โEleanor, Invisible.โ The film follows the story of a nonagenarian, Eleanor, who is trying to rebuild her life after the death of her best friend. Subsequently, she moves back to New York City after living in Florida for decades. It is produced by the “Black Widow” star Jonathan Lia and Keenan Flynn for These Pictures, alongside Pinky Promiseโs Kara Durrett and Jessamine Burgum and Maven Screen Mediaโs Celine Rattray and Trudie Styler.ย Wayfarer Studiosโ Justin Baldoni, Steve Sarowitz, Jamey Heath, and Andrew Calof are also serving as executive producers, along with Content Engineer Ezra Gabay and Raj Kishor Khaware.
“Eleanor the Great” is under production, and its release date is yet to be revealed. Since Johansson has shifted her focus to filmmaking, does this mean that she won’t be starring in films now?
