The Interest of Love (Season 1), Episodes 13 & 14 Recap:
Su-yeong had been conflicted over whether or not to pursue a relationship with Sang-su the night before this incident. After hearing Mi-gyeong’s bitter remarks, she starts introspecting her interest in Sang-su. Then, she calls someone, and that person happens to be Gyeong-pil. She spends the night with him in a hotel room as a part of her plan. When Jong-hyeon calls her phone, Gyeong-pil picks it up. It makes Jong-hyeon highly suspicious of Su-yeong’s affair.
However, his impulsive action leads him to lose his job. Mr. Yuk orders the employees to focus on their work and not to indulge in such personal matters. Employees witness Sang-su being heartbroken by the revelation at the time of the incident. So, they start gossiping about his relationship with Su-yeong. Since Mi-gyeong is in the same room, they do not indulge further.
Mi-gyeong is conflicted about what happened. Earlier, she was furious at Su-yeong for her affair with Sang-su. Now she is unsure what her motive is for sleeping with Gyeong-pil. Her troubled past with this man makes her question what Su-yeong was thinking to accomplish. Su-yeong does not answer any of her questions and goes back home. To her surprise, Jong-hyeon was still in his room. He asks her why she did what she did. She keeps a mum about it, making him even more frustrated.
Meanwhile, Sang-su does not ask her why she chose to sleep with Gyeong-pil. He still regrets treating Mi-gyeong badly and not being a faithful partner to her. So, he decides to act upon it. While she suffers due to the resulting stress, he goes to the hospital to meet her. She tells him to drive him back to his place. That’s when he breaks down and starts apologizing to her.
He mentions being regretful of his actions. But more than that, he regrets committing to a relationship with her when he is not 100% sure. He feels terrible that he could not like her as much as she did. He acknowledges that he should not have gotten into a relationship in the first place if he was interested in someone else. Ultimately, he urges her not to be swept in sorrow for their relationship not working out.
Mi-gyeong does not respond to it directly. She rather decides to leave his apartment with a key to her car, which she had gifted him before. But when she gets to the parking lot, she breaks down and starts crying about her fate. Meanwhile, at Su-yeong’s place, Jong-hyeong suddenly returns and starts taking out his books one after the other. She notices it a few times and follows him down to the ground floor. That’s when she sees him trying to destroy them while it is raining outside.
Since he does not even get an answer why Su-yeong slept with Gyeong-pil, he acts this way to process his rage. She starts crying herself and mentions that love does not always last forever. She also believes that neither of them loved the other and that they only felt that way. He feels that she dated him only out of pity for his situation. She tries her best to change his mind. But he is in no mood to listen.
While she sits on the ground in the pool of her tears, suddenly Sang-su shows up with an umbrella. He consoles her and lightens up her mood. After some time, they start having a conversation where neither of them is stressed as they always had been. The next day at the bank, she is announced as one of the two employees from their branch to get promoted to a senior department. Her perseverance finally paid off and earned her the position she deserved. However, Mr. Yuk coldly says goodbye to these transferring employees and storms out of the room.
Later, Su-yeong meets Sang-su in their lunchroom and offers to take him for a treat that weekend. He accepts the offer. He is still caught trying to mend his relationship with Mi-gyeong, and she is not doing well either. While she is having a meal with her brother, she learns some important details about Gyeong-pil that she was not aware of. It turns out, her father made Gyeong-pil leave his daughter. So, the stunt Gyeong-pil pulled back then resulted from her father’s pressure. She now feels sorry for him since his image was tarnished because her father decided to use his power against him unjustly.
While making a deal about the car she gifted Sang-su, she gets emotional about it. So, she calls Sang-su to meet him for a few moments. He mentions that he cannot do that since he is meeting her father for work purposes. Her father made an excuse of work to bring him to his office to have a word about his marriage with Mi-gyeong. When he is about to speak up, she enters the room. She emphasizes that she will decide when she wants to marry and whom she marries. Then she storms out of the room with Sang-su.
Back in her car, she proposes playing a coin toss to determine whether they should break up or follow her dad’s offer for their marriage. She mentions ‘tails’ to accept her father’s words and ‘heads’ otherwise. She sees ‘tails’ show up in the toss but does not show him this detail. At the same time, she decides to tell him that it was ‘heads’ probably because she does not want to stretch their unhappy relationship any further and keep him miserable either. After leaving him, she cries to herself over the sad affairs of her fate.
Meanwhile, Su-yeong tries to process the loss of Jong-hyeon from her life. She packs his stuff and goes to his study class to return it. But since he is not there, she gives it to his classmate, who goes back to return him to his new workplace. After opening it, he sees a photo Su-yeong had clicked of him that he needed for a form. He remembers her saying that he should never give up on his dream no matter what happens between them. Recounting that makes him even more emotional, and he starts sobbing uncontrollably.
Meanwhile, Sang-su goes to meet Su-yeong for a treat dinner she invited him to. He sees it from the street and recalls the painful memory of hesitation they share about it. He goes inside, and they have a friendly conversation about their personal lives. There is a clear hint of freedom they feel from being with each other without worrying about anyone else. They discuss love, life, and what they choose to call happiness.
Su-yeong mentions that from now on, she wants to prioritize her happiness. After their conversation, he drives back to her building. When he is about to open his door, she stops him and tells him they will meet the same day again. She said something that perplexed him, but he chose not to respond at the time. Meanwhile, she returns to her apartment, with many boxes lying in her main hall. She becomes emotional when she sees that in the place she has called home for a long time in this big city.
The Interest of Love (Season 1) Episode 14 Ending Explained:
Do Sang-su and Su-yeong finally end up being together?
The next day, Su-yeong does not show up at the bank. While the employees are unsure about the reason, someone mentions that she has resigned from her position despite the transfer that she has been hoping to get for years. Subsequently, when Gyeong-pil enters with food, he mentions that someone else has taken over the restaurant where he used to get food.
Sang-su hears these things and starts connecting the dots. It was Su-yeong’s parents’ place. Since it has been sold out, Su-yeong might move out to her town along with her parents. So, he rushes to her apartment to see his suspicion come true. A few handymen take all her luggage out of the building. Sang-su runs to her apartment and finds it empty.
After getting rid of all the obstacles coming in the way of their relationship, this must not be the future he expected to be a part of. So, he seems genuinely heartbroken by this news. He realizes this is what she meant when she told him her plan to prioritize her happiness. During her dialogue with her father the day before, she asks why he is deciding to return to their native now, even if she had asked him about it for years. He tells her that he is tired of trying to adjust to Seoul and, thus, made this decision now. Maybe her introspection about her life leads her to the same conclusion.
