What We Do In The Shadows (Season 5) Episode 7: Previously on ‘What We Do in the Shadows,’ we saw Guillermo trying to understand whether he has fully become a vampire or not. Laszlo’s strange experiment eventually led Guillermo to try flying, which resulted in a serious injury. Nadja brought him to Urgent Care only to realize that he is on the path to becoming a vampire. While Colin struggled with the fact he cannot drain other people, Nandor helped him to get back to his usual state as an energy vampire. They also had a chance encounter with John Slattery. But neither got to know that Guillermo is almost a vampire.

Now the new episode shows Nadja giving back to her Antipaxon community by giving them some important lessons. Meanwhile, Laszlo’s experiments have some unexpected results. He ends up putting extra work on Guillermo’s shoulders.

What We Do in the Shadows (Season 5), Episode 7 Recap:

Episode 7: Hybrid Creatures

Laszlo’s Experiements

Guillermo (Harvey Guillén) is caught in the awkward phase between being a human and a vampire. He is not a human and is not yet fully a vampire. So, Laszlo (Matt Berry) continues with his experiments. He is more intrigued by the possibilities of science to explore than helping this former familiar. Nevertheless, it badly affects Guillermo’s life. In his recent experiment, Laszlo decides to isolate Guillermo’s genetic marker which is slowing his transformation. For this, he attempts to mix Guillermo’s DNA with the DNA of stray animals just to monitor other possibilities. Be it a frog, a dog, or a swine to fuse the DNA with, he considers Guillermo as just a subject for his experiment.

Unfortunately, this does not help Laszlo yield remarkable results. So, he considers Guillermo to be a lost cause in the eyes of the scientific community. This is just him trying to deflect from his failure and blaming it on Guillermo. Anyhow, he gets Guillermo to take care of his failure. Turns out, Laszlo’s experiments resulted in mutant-like creatures that show similarities with Guillermo’s appearance. To not feel like an absolute failure, he tells Guillermo to kill these creatures.

But we all know how sensitive (and sensible) Guillermo is. He does not want to kill these creatures, especially when they remind him of himself. Soon after he goes into their room, one of these creatures starts speaking with him. It makes him realise that they share one thing with him – they are shy, and they do not open up to people right off the bat. Later on, other creatures start calling him ‘Daddy’. It makes the entire situation even more difficult and awkward. So, he tries to think of a way to save them. But, he hides this from Laszlo. Rather, he says that he is brave enough to get rid of them.

Nadja’s Lessons

Earlier, we saw Nadja (Natasia Demetriou) getting closer to her Antipaxon roots by meeting the community folks in New York. Now, she starts teaching a class at the Richmond Heights Community College from Staten Island as a way to give back to them. She helps them understand how they can assimilate in the USA. For that, she teaches them based on her rudimentary knowledge of this first-world, English-speaking country, and its ways of living. From burgers, fries, and Mickey Mouse to Mount Rushmore, she brings all the ‘important’ subjects to their attention. Later, she calls Thanksgiving an ‘annual Turkey sacrifice day’ and unknowingly jokes about this tradition.

Nadja’s decision stems from her troubling childhood. Back in Antipaxos, the villagers believed she burned down their school, and never forgave her for it. So she now decides to use ‘giving back’ as a way to reverse the hex on her. When she started teaching, she called Nandor (Kayvan Novak) and Colin (Mark Proksch) to join them. But not long after, she starts getting annoyed by these vampires and they get bored by her lessons. Eventually, she also realises her inadequacies in teaching. But what other way can she reverse her hex? Right when she loudly speaks about this, a woman suddenly approaches her. This woman calls herself ‘Helen the Magic Woman’. She says she can help Nadja with her curse. So, Nadja asks Colin and Nandor to fulfil her duties.

Helen the Magic Woman

To reverse Nadja’s hex, Helen asks her to bring a few things for a magic potion – an eye of a newt, a black cat’s whisker, and a chocolate-glazed doughnut from the Dunkin’ Donuts on Forest Avenue. Nadja finds Helen’s last request odd. But Helen explains it in a way Nadja would find a justified request. Nadja returns with all other objects as Helen mentioned. But she cannot find the exact doughnut Helen asked for. So, Helen sends her back to get the exact kind she wants from Dunkin’ from only the Forest Avenue branch. She says that she had a magic wand for thousands of years. But Nadja feels certain she saw this woman go outside and pick up a random stick. This makes her suspicious about her claims.

Nandor tries to teach the Antipaxon students. But he teaches history based on just his knowledge. Colin objects to it and calls history, subjective and mentions how it is often written by the oppressors. He puts on a ‘cool teacher’ act and thinks that it will help him drain the energy of these humans. Colin sits strangely in front of them and makes them awkward. The students soon get annoyed. So Nandor takes charge and decides to bring them to a history museum.

What We Do in the Shadows (Season 5), Episode 7 Ending Explained:

How does Guillermo save strange creatures?

Nadja goes to the particular Dunkin’ Donuts store that Helen wanted her to visit. That’s where she sees Helen’s photo on a poster that said, ‘Do Not Serve’. Helen Johnson had reportedly harassed the employees of this shop. So, Nadja realises that Helen lied to her. She goes back and confronts this woman. Helen makes her see how she is in a similar predicament as hers. ‘You have no idea what it feels like to not be allowed back to the one place you feel at home’, she says. That makes Nadja’s heart swell and forgive this woman.

Meanwhile, at the history museum, Nandor gets shocked to see his underwear on display. It angers him. Later on, he also gets frustrated seeing how history portrayed him. It also claimed that Nandor never had sexual intercourse. That makes Nandor so angry that he creates a mess in that museum. Later on, Colin changes the history document written in that museum to make Nandor look cooler – as he sees himself. This helps improve his friendship with Nandor.

On the other hand, Guillermo pretends that he shot down all the creatures. The next day, he drops them off at the retirement home. He believes they can provide company for old people, as their emotional support animals. However, he keeps one of the creatures – Binky back at the residence – probably as an emotional support animal for him – to not feel lonely among vampires that do not value him.
