Starring Charlie Rowe, last seen in the musical biopic Rocketman, Gigi & Nate follows the true life events of Nate Gibson’s life. Nate suffers from a near-fatal illness that leaves him differently abled. A year has passed since the incident and he is still unable to function properly in the real world. This is when his mother gets him Gigi – an unusual service animal, as a gift.
The rest of the film feels like it follows their first meeting with the two of them bonding together as onlookers judge and make fun of this unlikely duo. The supporting cast with Rowe includes the debut of Allie – the adorable monkey who plays Gigi and a host of Oscar-nominated characters actors like Marcia Gay Harden, Jim Belushi & Diane Ladd, along with Josephine Langford, Zoe Colletti, Hannah Riley, and Sasha Compere.
Directed by BAFTA-winner Nick Hamm and co-written by David Hudgins, the official synopsis reads as, “Gigi & Nate is the story of Nate Gibson, a young man whose life is turned upside down after he suffers a near-fatal illness and is left a quadriplegic. Moving forward seems near impossible until he meets his unlikely service animal, Gigi — a curious and intelligent capuchin monkey. Although she is trained to assist Nate with his basic needs, Gigi helps Nate find what he needs most of all: hope.”
As far as the critical reception is concerned, critics haven’t been too kind to the film with a really poor, 18% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Film critic Devika Girish of the New York Times claims that “Gigi & Nate opts for mawkish wish fulfillment, undercutting the film’s powerful emotional core.”
