After taking a dig at the art world and its many facades with a sharp and cryptic satire in The Square (2017), Ruben Östlund is back with ‘Triangle of Sadness,’ another up-roaring black comedy that takes the upper echelon of society on a cruise trip. And if you are even vaguely aware of the two-time Palme d’Or winning Swedish filmmaker, you would know that not everything will go down exactly as you anticipate.
Starring British Actor Harris Dickinson as Carl, with the late Charlibi Dean playing his infamous girlfriend Dean, Triangle of Sadness also stars Filipina actress Dolly de Leon, Croatian actor Zlatko Burić as the ever-cursing oligarch, and American actor Woody Harrelson playing the ship’s captain Thomas Smith.
In spite of having a polarizing reaction like most of the Swedish director’s films, Triangle of Sadness received an eight-minute standing ovation at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival and is a 73% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. The consensus reads, “Triangle of Sadness lacks the sharp edges of Östlund’s earlier work, but this blackly humorous swipe at the obscenely affluent has its own rewards.”
Where to Watch and Stream ‘Triangle of Sadness’ Online?
Currently, the only way to watch Triangle of Sadness is in a movie theatre. Neon, which acquired the North American distribution rights for the movie at a whopping 8 Million Dollars, winning a bidding war against A24, Hulu, Focus Features, and Sony Picture Classics, will be releasing it in US theatres in a limited capacity on October 7th, 2022. As far as streaming is concerned, Neon usually places most of its ambitious buys on Hulu in the USA. However, depending on which country you belong to, Triangle of Sadness might also be picked up by MUBI, who has acquired the rights to the movie too. As far as the date of streaming is concerned, there’s no update on that as of yet.
