Beth and her husband, Dan, have moved to a small town with their newborn, Anna. Their plush house is detached from the city, making Beth anxious. What compounds her misery is a nagging feeling she can’t shrug off that someone’s watching her. Dan seems to think it is just the stress of moving to a new place. But as it is foreshadowed, it is something more sinister. On an innocuous visit to the supermarket, Beth is confronted by Boyd, who works at the store.
He unusually demands that Beth and her family leave the town as it is not good for them. The local Sheriff, Tim, drives by and explains to Beth that he knows Boyd. He uncharacteristically asks Beth to “not create trouble for the littlest of matters” and does not do anything. She has an argument with Dan about the earlier scuffle.
When she mentions they move again, Dan loses his calm. They’ve already moved three times before this because of problems she has had with the other places. Dan convinces Beth to go to therapy for her increasingly alarming panic attacks. She was put on medication by her parents in her early teens for the same problem. Some lady saves her life as Beth almost walks in front of a car. She tells her about the fairytale of Adamantina while padding Beth’s injuries. Adamantina went to the market to sell her sister’s homespun thread but instead traded it for a beautiful doll she wanted. It turns out that the doll was magical, and it grants them several months’ wishes and changed their lives. The lesson is: get what you want. Her name is Marion. She’s the preacher’s wife. She runs a daycare. As she leaves the church, someone is seen following her in a blue truck.
At night, when Dan is away at the clinic, Beth spots someone outside the window. He dismisses her claims and asks her to call the police. She must face her fears and confront them to overcome her struggles. Marion also reveals that God didn’t bless her and Jim with a child, even though she badly wanted to have one. Ever since that day in the woods with Marion, Beth became a changed person.
Her marriage with Dan was revived. So did her painting. But it came at a cost. While having a beer with Jim at the bar, Dan is approached by a woman. She asks Dan not to trust Jim and says that he has taken something from a friend of hers. His real name isn’t Jim, either. Dan excuses himself when Jim comes back. We catch Jim slipping something into Dan’s drink, proving the woman’s point. Something is definitely going on.
What has been Marion and Jim’s plan all along?
Later that night, Dan comes back heavily drunk, and Jim drops him at the house. Earlier, Beth saw someone in the woods, which is later confirmed by footprints. As Beth and Dan talk, Jim goes around the house. He disconnects the baby monitor and carefully approaches Anna. Meanwhile, Marion stands in the shadows downstairs and calls Tim, accusing Dan and Beth of endangering Anna’s life.
She even speculates that drugs are involved. It is highly likely that Jim planted the drugs in their bathroom in the scene before this. As Dan tells Beth more about his night, she becomes convinced Jim got Dan drunk on purpose. Before she can do anything, Beth realizes Anna is gone. She revisits her time with Marion and comes to the haunting conclusion that it was Anna she wanted this whole time.
Beth leaves immediately to track Marion and Jim down at the abandoned shack she visited with Marion. It is also revealed that Boyd has been involved in their plan to run away from this place. He is supposed to bring the tithing money from the church to the abandoned shack. We see him following Beth into the woods and convincing himself to kill her for his family. Marion rationalizes their actions to Jim by once again laying down that the string takes what they want. That is god’s will. The irony is that Marion is the real preacher in the family!
Who is Boyd? How is he related to Marion and Jim?
Boyd is actually Marion and Jim’s son. Not their biological offspring but someone they kidnapped, like they did Anna. But he decided against killing Beth. The sheriff arrives at the house and finds oxycontin in the bathroom, which Jim planted. He immediately accuses Dan of dealing drugs and arrests him. He realizes what is going on and starts to animatedly accuse Marion. The officers get ahold of him and aren’t convinced by his accusations.
In a flashback, we see Marion dying Boyd’s hair and convincing him that his name isn’t Tristan but Boyd. It seems like Boyd has moments of lucidity like he did when he tried to warn Beth at the grocery store. He has one in the present day as well and runs off. He calls the Sheriff’s office and hides. Tim is informed and takes the officers to Boyd’s location. Beth arrives at the shack and tries convincing Jim to return Anna. He starts weeping, and Beth hits him on the head. She takes Anna and rushes out. But Marion catches her.
How are Marion’s actions in the movie explained?
She explains that her own mother was a self-consumed artist like Beth and couldn’t find time for her. That trauma is the cause of her actions in the present day.
