‘Past Lives’ Trailer: A24’s New Romance is Sure to Make You Catch Your Breath

A24 has just released a poignant trailer for the Berlinale jury-favorite romance drama, ‘Past Lives.’ The film presents a highly impressive cast of Greta Lee, Teo Yoo, and John Magaro in a tale of unrequited love. Directed by Celine Song, it is already one of the year’s best-reviewed films. 

The plot revolves around Nora (Greta Lee) and Hae Sung (Teo Yeo), two childhood friends from South Korea who couldn’t stay in touch after her family immigrated to America. After years of growing apart, they meet again in the US, only to be confronted by her present relationship with Arthur (John Magaro). 

The trailer gives a look into a moving narrative of a rekindled romance. From the looks of it, the film feels like a profound introspection about love, life, and heartache that is bound to give you a lump in the throat.

Peter Debrudge from Variety showers the film with praise for its understated approach. David Rooney from The Hollywood Reporter also adored this stunning, decades-spanning romance. While Vox calls it a ‘Gentle, funny, and achingly gorgeous film,’ Slate says it is ‘The year’s first great movie.’

After the last year’s grand success for Everything Everywhere All at Once, Past Lives promises yet another gut-wrenching tale of Asian-American characters. From its world premiere at Sundance to its Berlinale tour, the film has already received a solid reception from critics and audiences alike. 

Celine Song makes her writing & directorial debut with this film. Before this film, she worked as a staff writer for The Wheel of Time and appeared as herself in a TV Series called Working in the Theatre. 

The film’s star, Greta Lee, is known for her role as Maxine from Netflix’s Russian Doll and as Stella Bak in the Apple TV+ series, The Morning Show. John Magaro is widely known for his performance in Kelly Reichardt’s critically acclaimed film First Cow. South-Korean actor makes his debut in Hollywood with this film. He was last seen in Park Chan-wook’s arresting romance, Decision to Leave.  

Due to the high praise before its theatrical release, Past Lives is easily one of the most anticipated films from 2023. While the release date is not yet declared, A24 mentioned that it would be coming soon.
