When it premiered back in Sundance 2020, Miranda July’s much-awaited return to filmmaking was lauded with laughter and tears of joy. The reason being its peculiar way to win your heart. Cinephiles from around the world have praised and criticized July’s previous works because of just how stylistically weird they seem. However, when you strip them down to the very basics, they are about love and people. Now that Focus Features has released the script for Kajillionaire, you can see through the flaws you might have noticed in the first instant.

The Kajillionaire screenplay is written by Miranda July herself and follows the life of Old Dalio (played by Evan Rachel Wood). The main themes here have to do with dysfunctionality but there’s also a satirical look at what it’s like to be human.

Old Dalio is someone who hasn’t been told to love. She doesn’t for the love of her life understand the reasons for people cuddling or loving each other. Her parents have always been people who conned their way through life. They have never told her what it is like to be a child and all she has ever been is just another entity in the family.

Essentially this is a lesbian love story. However, bracketing it as one would only be diluting July’s wild vision of the human condition. It is oftentimes that we don’t see the world in the way it is – wild, weird, and weary. In Kajillionare, July satirizes a family and their antiques to really bring home the need for empathy.

Some of the highlights of the screenplay are the post tremor scenes where Old Dalio suddenly starts seeing the world differently. Crawling out of a womb to really get to what she wants. Other great scenes include the climax scene that makes a supermarket counter feel like a last resort and the beginning of a lot of things.

It’s a smartly scripted comedy that can only come out of a mind like Miranda’s.
