Only Murders In The Building (Season 3) Episode 6: First it was Kimber, then it was, and finally Loretta was it. Cinda Canning returned and made an offer to Mabel, and Charles was dumped by Joy. However, Oliver’s discovery was the absolute bombshell that seemed to warrant watching ‘Ghost Light’. Unfortunately, just like in episode 4, there was no Meryl Streep. So that part really put a pause on things as there was no progress on the Loretta front.
Nevertheless, other things did proceed, with Charles Haden-Savage, Oliver Putnam, and Mabel Mora’s fraying collaboration splitting even further. What happens in ‘Ghost Light’?
Only Murders In The Building (Season 3), Episode 6 “Ghost Light” Recap:
The episode began with a voiceover from Howard talking about a stage myth of Gideon’s energy needing to be swept off to avoid a curse. He names plays that fell victim to this curse, before adding the death of Ben Glenroy to the tale. Meanwhile, Charles sits alone at home with President McKinney (the fish with the attitude). He informs readers that Joy has taken everything ( all the fish), except for the two guys with issues.
At that moment, as thunder claps, there is a knocking on Mabel’s door. She races to answer it and sees Howard standing there in a yellow raincoat. He says he has something to confess and admits to killing Ben Glenroy.
Oliver and Charles also come to Mabel’s apartment, where they hear Howard’s story. He speaks about his failure to sweep the stage that night; something does regularly. Howard also says that he had spotted Gideon when he was sweeping at the theater. But why was he there?
Howard wants to ensure that the Gooseberry theater is ghost-free ahead of the return of the production of Death Rattle Dazzle.
Charles then looks shocked when he ses Tobert come to the room in his towel. As Howard seems paranoid due to seeing Gideon, Oliver asks him to calm down. Tobert and Mabel discuss Jonathan, which surprises Oliver and Charles. Mabel explains that Jonathan, as an understudy, had a huge motive. The three then discuss who will go with Howard to the theater. Mabel decides to inform Tobert, Charles and Oliver that they are a trio and won’t be hired.
Charles, Mabel, and Oliver then re-enter the theater where a ghost light (an old theater tradition that stays on at all times) goes out. Oliver attributes it to KT who is running cues. Oliver decides to split and hunt, but Howard and Mabel decide that the group would remain together. That is because it is the first rule in every horror movie.
Quite inexplicably, Charles gets President McKinney along with him. He explains his actions by saying that the fish would have been traumatized by Joy’s sudden exit. At that moment, a sandbag misses him. This is followed by another sandbag that again missed him.
The quartet goes to KT’s office where she takes charge of the situation. Howard goes along with her to check the ropes, and Mabel finds a sign on a sheet. The trio decide to use it to see if it matches the “Fucking Pig” on the mirror.
Charles confronts Mabel about who she recorded the podcast with, showed the murderboard to, and trusted. She retorts that she had a better track record (probably referring to Jan in Season 1) and taunts both Charles and Oliver (who had left) by saying she would keep investigating as usual.
Oliver goes to Ben Glenroy’s dressing room to compare the writing. He suddenly finds out that he is all alone and announces that he knew Krav Maga. When he visits a storage room, somebody puts their arm on his mouth. Oliver identifies his assailant as a fellow theater director named Jerry Blau. He is squatting on the premises as he has nowhere to go. Jerry Blau admits to being the ghost that Howard saw and dropping the bags near Charles.
Charles finds a janitor’s closet (or a prop room), puts President McKinney in a tank and then realises he is locked in the room. He thought he found a walkie talkie and tugs on it to release huge amounts of smoke in the room.
Mabel is hunting for the two and apprehends someone moving around. It is Tobert, who explains he came there in pursuit of Jonathan.
KT lets slip to Howard that her door was never locked, but he said it was on opening night. She also tells him that sweeping the stage would not do anything against Gideon. KT says that Howard has to include Gideon and not sweep him away.
Jonathan confesses he never wants to be the lead, blowing up the theory of yet another cast member being the killer.
Jerry shares the lighthouse incident featuring Charles, Ben, and Loretta with Oliver. The play director looks shocked when he hears that Charles punched Ben Glenroy. Jerry even says that he heard the words that sounded very much like “fucking pig”, leading Oliver to sit and take notice.
Charles emerges from the room and appears to be quite dramatic. Tobert offers to get him electrolytes. Charles then seems suspicious of Tobert being there and seems to accuse Mabel. Before things can get ugly, she spots someone running and hastens after him. It turns out to be Oliver.
Only Murders In The Building (Season 3), Episode 6 “Ghost Light”
Where was Oliver running?
Oliver was sprinting to Ben Glenroy’s dressing room.
What did Oliver do in Ben’s dressing room?
Oliver attempted to wipe out the “Fucking Pig” from Ben’s dressing room mirror. When Charles told him he was crossing a line, Oliver reminded him of opening night when he struck Ben Glenroy. This prompted an explanation from Charles when Mabel asked her why she didn’t tell anyone.
Charles and Oliver then fought with the latter saying he wished he had hired someone who could actually sing. Charles responded by quitting Death Rattle Dazzle.
Why did Oliver want to forget about the murder?
Oliver wanted to forget about the murder as the police had already caught someone. He wished to use the opportunity to allow Loretta to become a star and realize his dream of directing a hit play.
Why did Mabel march out of the group?
When Mabel told the two men that Cinda was right, Oliver told her that she should have a grown up job; something, in his words, she had never had. This saw her finally come clean and tell Charles and Oliver that she was done with their self-involved insanity. Mabel walked out of the group and continued working on the murderboard along with Tobert.
Will the trip re-unite? Or is the Only Murders In The Building podcast done for good? Also, when will the Loretta mystery unravel. As we move closer to the climax, expect Hulu to drop further reveals; starting next week in Episode 7 – ‘CoBro’.
