The Killing Vote (Season 1), Episode 4 Recap:

The episode begins by taking us 8 years back when Seok-joo’s daughter was murdered. Mu-chan is seen disturbed after seeing the murder scene and Seok-joo rushes into the house where the crime had taken place and is in a state of shock and agony. Seok-joo is watching a video of his daughter who mentions that he was his hero as he always protected her. Mu-chan sees this and is heartbroken.

We are back to the present where Mu-chan asks Seok-joo if he was Gaetal and we see why Seok-joo would believe that Mu-chan could be Gaetal. Previously, Mu-chan was angered as the culprit got away with his crime and Seok-joo was the one stopping him from doing something hastily. Mu-chan addresses the reporters waiting outside the prison. He apologizes for lying to the public and warns Gaetal that he will catch him no matter what. He also tells the public that to catch the culprit quickly he made those choices but he wouldn’t have done anything differently even now.

Joo Hyun realizes that things are getting tense and creates a distraction for the reporters so she can take Mu-chan away. Ji-soo is informed that Bae Gi-chul’s wife was murdered with money stuffed down her throat. Seok-joo subtly threatens the jail warden and he gets beat up. Joo Hyun took Mu-chan home as he was the hot topic of town and reporters were flooding near the police station. Mu-chan is hesitant to stay back in Joo Hyun’s house but he comes around.

Joo Min on the other hand asks Mu-chan if he lacked common sense to stay back in a house with 2 girls. They quarrel like kids but Joo Min helps them out in getting closer to finding Gaetal. Joo Min tells Mu-chan that the man in Seok-joo’s house smelt of metal and fireworks. Mu-chan realizes that it could be the smell of gunpowder. Mu-chan is impressed with Joo Min but then they argue about if Gaetal’s actions are right or wrong. Joo Min tells Mu-chan that if he had faced injustice like the other victims would have felt he wouldn’t care about principles. But Mu-chan retaliates by asking if he had faced injustices and if he has the right to arrest Gaetal. Joo Min gets annoyed and goes back to her room.

Joo Hyun finds her and Joo Min asks her to send Mu-chan away by the next morning otherwise the neighbours would gossip. Joo Hyun and Mu-chan drink together and Joo Hyun tells him about the scar behind her ear. She tells him it was during an accident and whenever she is stressed it burns. She opens up about her parent’s death and its impact, especially on Joo Min.

Joo Min is curious to know what happened between him and Seok-joo. Mu-chan tells her what had taken place 8 years prior. The man who murdered Seok-joo’s daughter was Byun Woo-taek but he was funded by the chairman of Samdo Steel (the assemblywoman) where his parents worked. He was not charged with many of his crimes before because of some mental disability. On the day of the trial, Woo-taek retracted his confession and the evidence Mu-chan had produced was not considered by the court as the opposition had found a way to dismiss the evidence. Hence Woo-taek was let out free. That night Seok-joo had stabbed Woo-taek.

Mu-chan believes Seok-joo still resents him as the culprit did not get the deserved punishment because of him. Just then they both receive an image of the murdered Elena. Gaetal’s crimes are becoming a pop culture situation as in Joo Min’s school bullies were pretending to be Gaetal to trouble other innocent kids. Joo Min stands up to one of these bullies and he is about to hit her with a chair but Ji-hoon gets in the way and gets hit. Mu-chan visits the police station and apologizes to his colleagues. As they were watching the CCTV footage from Elena’s crime scene they spot the taxi driver Dong-gyu. They eventually decide to let the local stations handle the case for the time being.

Joo Hyun visits the hospital to meet Joo Min and Ji-hoon. She yells that Joo Min was being nosy and getting in trouble and apologizes to Ji-hoon. They both say they were seeking justice. At the hospital, she meets Min-soo (homeroom teacher) and he bonds with her. At the prison, Chul-min asks the officer to get rid of Seok-joo. Joo Hyun meets Do-hee the reporter and asks her for Gaetal’s contact information but she pretends she doesn’t know what Joo Hyun is talking about. Joo Hyun promises to get back at her and leaves. Chul-min meets Mu-chan and hands him out letters that were received by Seok-joo. The letters were sent by Seok-joo’s no.1 1 fan. Mu-chan asks Joo Hyun to analyze the letters.

Joo Hyun tells Mu-chan that the letters were sent by Gaetal as the letters contained information about his next target. They realize that there is a page missing from these letters and it probably had information on who the next target is. Mu-chan and Joo Hyun visit Seok-joo in prison. Mu-chan knows that Seok-joo wants something from the police hence only a part of the letters were received by the cops.

The Killing Vote (Season 1), Episode 4 Ending, Explained:

What is the truth behind Seok-joo’s daughter’s murder?

At the prison, Joo Hyun asks Seok-joo about the missing papers but Seok-joo tells her that she is violating the Privacy Act and she could be put in jail. Joo Hyun calmly says that she had found the letters in the prison trash can. Seok-joo tells her that he had destroyed the missing pages and all the information it had is now only in his memory and they can’t find it. Seok-joo tells Joo Hyun to look at the camera and tell Mu-chan that he would be willing to help the police if he gets a special pardon and is out of prison. He says that much and leaves.

We see Seok-joo helping Hyun by deciphering the meaning behind the letters. He also mentions that the judicial system was failing as many criminals with terrible crimes were let free. Later we also see that the police were forced to let Seok-joo get out of the prison and Joo Hyun was waiting to receive him.

We get to see Min-soo’s atrocious behavior when he hits his girlfriend and Ji-young supports these actions. We know that they are somehow related to the Gaetal or using that as an opportunity to get their dirty deeds done but their true intentions are not yet revealed. Seok-joo is now out of prison and it is going to be interesting to see if he is going to cooperate with the police genuinely or if he has other plans. Min-soo is suspicious even in the eyes of Ji-hoon. The identity of the no. 1 fan is yet to be revealed. What if all this was an act collaborated by Mu-chan and Seok-joo to bring to light the injustices that take place in the world?
