With Bohemian Rhapsody being followed by Rocketman, music biopics are taking the center stage. The lives of the musical legends like Freddie Mercury and Elton John are being cinematically rejoiced by their fans and critics likewise. In this recent trend, there is another entry with ‘Respect’, which is based on the life of the iconic singer – Aretha Franklin. The one-minute Respect teaser trailer dropped recently which is creating quite a buzz for many reasons.
The film is titled after the famous Aretha Franklin track – ‘Respect’. It stars Jennifer Hudson, who has earned an Oscar for her performance from 2006 film called Dreamgirls. Due to her own incredible singing talent, the fans of the late singer look just as much pleased by the casting of J.Hud in the lead role. Respect is about the rise of the singer’s career, who has also been a songwriter, pianist, and a social rights activist.

Besides her, the film also stars an extensive acting talent. The Respect teaser trailer gives a peek into that. Forest Whitaker plays the role of her father C. L. Franklin whereas Audra McDonald is cast as her mother, Barbara Siggers Franklin. In the role of known personalities, Mary J Blige is caste as the singer Dinah Washington, Gilbert Glenn Brown as Martin Luther King, and Tituss Burgess as Reverend Dr. James Cleveland. The remaining cast includes the likes of Marlon Wayans, Marc Maron, and Heather Headley.
‘Respect’ is the debut feature of South African and American stage and TV director – Liesl Tommy. She has worked on the episodes from the shows like Jessica Jones, Mrs. Fletcher, and Insecure as a director. The screenplay is written by Tracey Scott Wilson, who is known for her previous work as a playwright.
The film is supposed to release in December this year. From the Respect teaser trailer, it looks like an absolute treat for the audience.
