Soon after the first teaser hinted at another patriotic biopic, the Akshay Kumar starrer Mission Mangal has landed with a new trailer online. The trailer features Kumar as senior scientist Rakesh Dhawan and his women-centric team.

Slated as the story of ordinary people who made it possible for the Indian Space Research Organisation to have its first satellite sent to Mars. Mission Mangal features an all-lady cast including Vidya Balan, Taapsee Pannu, Sonakshi Sinha, and Kirti Kulhari. With an ensemble like that, you can expect an inspiring biopic but the tone of the trailer completely ruins the seriousness.

It feels more like a run of the mill Bollywood movie with songs and dance and all the shenanigans. The forced humor completely ruins something that could possibly pay homage to the people it is based on. Instead, it feels like a comical parody of a mission dumbing it down for the everyday people.

Directed by Jagan Shakti who has previously assisted in films like Padman, English Vinglish and Shamitabh, this could have been a winner. However, only time will tell if he succeeds or gets derailed like his mentor R Balki.

Mission Mangal wend into a lot of controversies even before it was under production. A US-based filmmaker Radha Bharadwaj filed a lawsuit that halted production of the film where she claimed that the film borrows heavily from a script she wrote. The lawsuit went for a long time.

The official synopsis of the film reads: “Based on true events of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launching the Mars Orbiter Mission (Mangalyaan), making it the least expensive mission to Mars.”

Mission Mangal is produced by Fox Star and releases on August 15, 2019.
