School Spirits (Season 1), Episode 5 Recap:

In Episode 5, Claire is shown waiting outside Mr. Anderson’s house, the suspected culprit behind the school money theft. She is visibly anxious and trying to contact her professor for updates. The police have increased surveillance outside Anderson’s house since the incident, which only adds to Claire’s nervousness.

Meanwhile, people in the school are eagerly anticipating the upcoming homecoming game. Simon and Maddie, suspecting that something is wrong with Claire, observe her closely during lunchtime. It is revealed that Maddie and Claire used to be close friends, but both had to deal with domestic issues while growing up. Claire had a tumultuous relationship with her parents, and Maddie had to watch her mother drink to cope with her grief.

One night, when Claire sought refuge from her parents fighting at Maddie’s house, Maddie couldn’t let her in as her mother was having a breakdown. After that night, Claire moved in with her father and ignored Maddie when she returned to school, causing a rift in their friendship.

In the following scene, Claire approaches the school principal and inquires about Mr. Anderson’s whereabouts. Maddie and Charley happen to be in the schoolyard and notice Claire speaking with the principal. They decide to follow her, hoping to uncover any suspicious behavior.

Claire is persistent in learning more about Mr. Anderson, but the principal declines to provide additional information as the police are still investigating. Maddie becomes suspicious of Claire’s motives, suspecting that she must be connected to Mr. Anderson in some way since her curiosity seems unwarranted.

We find out that Claire’s mother divorced her father and married a rich man who sponsors the school. Mr. Anderson is revealed to have stolen money from Claire’s father, and Claire received excellent grades in his class. Simon convinces the janitor to give him the key to Mr. Anderson’s room, and he searches for evidence of a relationship between Claire and the professor.

In the next scene, we see Simon confronting Nicole about Xavier. He seems agitated and expresses his dislike for the fact that Nicole is always defending Xavier. Although Xavier has been a great help to Maddie’s mother in discovering the truth about her daughter’s disappearance, Simon remains suspicious of him.

Xavier is convinced that Maddie will not return, but he never gives up hope for Sandra to find her daughter. In the next scene, Maddie sees her mother visiting her teacher to collect the schoolwork she had missed. Maddie is surprised to see a new and rare side of her mother, who is collected and present about her daughter’s well-being. Sandra admits that she may not be the perfect mother of the year, but she still tries to be the mother of the day or week and hopes her daughter will return soon.

Despite being gone, Maddie still worries about her mother’s well-being. Watching her mother act so uncharacteristically breaks Maddie’s heart. She knows that if her mother were to find out about her death, she would spiral back into alcoholism and possibly harm herself. Maddie decides to make a sacrifice by allowing her mother to continue holding onto hope about her daughter, as she cannot bear the thought of her mother suffering any further.

Meanwhile, Claire confronts Mr. Anderson about what he told the police. He admits to stealing the money to pay off his father’s debt, but when she asks if he mentioned her name, he becomes defensive and storms off, claiming that he doesn’t remember.

The spirits are in energetic and excited, working together to celebrate Wally’s glory days as a football player. Rhonda is eager to find a way to cross over to the other side now that she knows it’s possible. Wally has been practicing hard for the upcoming football game, which also happens to be the anniversary of his death.

During a conversation with Maddie, Wally reveals that he has been eagerly anticipating the moment when he can see his mother cheering for the Bandits (formerly known as the Devils) once again. Despite not being a big fan of football, he played anyway to make his mother proud, who always encouraged him to become the best version of himself. In fact, Wally had died while playing football due to exhaustion and injury, but his mother had insisted he continues playing even though he complained of minor injuries.

Now, in the present day, Wally wears the jersey that his mother loved seeing him in every year. He goes to her and sits by the empty seat that she always kept in memory of her son. Meanwhile, Maddie’s mother is passing out flyers in hopes of finding her missing daughter to anyone entering the stadium.

In a previous scene, Xavier visits an abandoned house where the police had claimed to find Maddie’s backpack. As he searches through the house, he sees someone jump out of a window, but before he can identify them, they have already fled the scene. Xavier shares this information with Simon, who becomes increasingly curious about the identity of the person responsible for Maddie’s disappearance and how everything seems to be pointing toward her.

While watching Wally deal with his loss in his own way during the football game, Maddie comes to a realization. She understands that she has been trying to balance being on two sides for too long, and now it’s time to make a difficult decision. Maddie knows that she must finally choose a side and let go, even if it means that her mother will have to deal with her life without Maddie’s help. This means accepting that she may never receive closure regarding her own disappearance.

School Spirits (Season 1) Episode 5: Recap & Ending, Explained:

What is Claire so afraid of, and how is she related to Maddie’s disappearance?

In the next scene, Sandra is feeling overwhelmed and ready to leave school. She asks Xavier for a ride, but Nicole offers to help instead. Meanwhile, Xavier, Nicole, and Simon receive a text message containing a video of Claire having a heated argument with Mr. Anderson. In the video, Claire threatens to report Mr. Anderson for stealing her family’s money and not giving her the grades she deserves. The three of them wonder who sent the video.

At the same time, while waiting during the football game, Claire receives a text message that visibly makes her nervous. The contents of the message are not shown to the audience, but as police officers pass by, Claire jumps up and throws something away out of fear.

As Nicole accompanies Sandra to the car, she offers to take the bags and put them in the trunk. She carefully looks around to ensure that no one is watching her. Once she opens the trunk, she discreetly places the bags inside. Is she hiding something? Guess we will have to wait until the next episode to find out.

Who sent the video about Claire fighting with Mr. Anderson?

As the group tries to figure out who sent the video to them, Maddie comes up with a plan to expose Claire’s secret. She convinces Simon to be her messenger and asks Xavier to text Claire, asking for her forgiveness and inviting her to the homecoming dance.

Maddie feels conflicted as she wishes Xavier would say those things to her instead. Meanwhile, Wally, who is overjoyed after his recent freedom, thanks Maddie for helping him let go of his past and asks her to be his dance partner. Maddie accepts, and Wally is thrilled.

Later, Simon drags Maddie to the janitor’s room and confronts him about watching a video earlier when he had come to ask for Mr. Anderson’s room keys. The janitor reveals that he was actually watching a video of Maddie’s murder site, which students had vandalized with crass comments. Maddie notices the room’s layout and asks Simon to find out about a particular door’s location.

They eventually find out that the door leads to a Cold War-time panic room that could have been a possible witness to death or even murder. Maddie and Simon follow a passage that leads to a door that Simon thinks Claire might have used to drag Maddie’s body. The episode ends with this shocking revelation.
