Lo and Behold: Reveries of the Connected World [2016] – JIO MAMI Mumbai Film Festival Review

Werner Herzog’s “Lo and Behold: Reveries of the Connected World” explores the grim, weird and the fundamentally positive side of man-made marvel – internet. The veteran film-maker’s keen perspective and the absence of moralistic hand-wringing stop it from being just another documentary about the digital world.

Fire At Sea [2016] — An Elegiac Reflection on the Unimaginable Agony

Fire At Sea [2016] — An Elegiac Reflection on the Unimaginable Agony

In “Fire At Sea” aka “Fuoco Ammare”, Gianfranco Rosi uses the language of cinema to reinforce a tranquil as well as a turbulent reality. The 25 Best Films of 2015

The 25 Best Films of 2015

We’re halfway through 2015, with July almost arriving, but I waited to finish watching all the possible good films of 2015 before I come up with a list that I totally find justified for my own taste. Here is a comprehensive list of the Best Films from 2015. Do not go bonking if you don’t see Son of Saul , The Revenant on the list or Spotlight in the Top 10. Here is a documentary that offers nothing violent but still manages to make you uncomfortable with its cringe worthy conversations. People get old and withered but only a handful of them become wiser and ponder upon the evil things they did when they were younger. Unfortunately in Joshua Oppenheimer’s The Look of Silence, there are no such people, they murdered hundreds of thousands of people and they take pride in it because the country made heroes of them.

The Great Cinematographers and their “Visions of Light”: A love letter to the DOP

Great cinematography has a tendency of sneaking up on you. When it’s done well, the average moviegoer will have a sense of appreciation for the level of visual beauty on display but most people aren’t really conscious of the artistry involved and the incredible level of work that goes into the making of all of those pretty pictures. I know for me personally, it took many years of film appreciation before it finally occurred to me the extremely important place that cinematography holds within the movie making process.
