Written by Lena Waithe and directed by Melina Matsoukas, Universal Pictures and Makeready’s Queen & Slim now has a first look trailer. Featuring Daniel Kaluuya (Get Out, Widows) and Jodie Turner-Smith; the first look harkens back to the age-old Bonnie & Clyde situation.
Well known for her collaborations with Beyonce’s Formation, Queen & Slim is Melina Matsoukas’s directorial debut. Filled with real served up emotions and a socially conscious side, the film follows the story of a couple on their first date and goes beyond normalizing when they are pulled over for a minor traffic infraction. The film escalates into an intense thriller when one of them kills a police officer in self-defense. The film shows how a pretty normal day turns out into a difficult run when the couple – Where the man is a retail employ and the woman a criminal defense lawyer are terrified and in fear because of their color.
The film focuses mostly on the internal dynamics that set between the two people as they form a strong bond of love among themselves while fleeing for no authentic reason whatsoever. Also, involved is a viral video of them in the act serving as a symbol of trauma, terror, grief, and pain for all the people of the country who have been often been in similar situations.
This is just what the first look makes us feel, a more detailed Queen & Slim trailer is supposed to land soon but for now, the teaser has us intrigued. The film also stars Chloë Sevigny, Bokeem Woodbine, Sturgill Simpson, Kenneth Kynt Bryan, and Dominic Cancelliere and is slated to release on 27th November 2019.
