Just a few years before, when PTA announced his new movie to feature an actor like Adam Sandler, everyone was baffled by his choice. Then came their ‘Punch Drunk Love’ and it didn’t take much time for it to be a Critics’ darling. Adam Sandler particularly surprised audiences and critics alike with his highly realized performance. Same happened when he did ‘The Meyerowitz Stories’ for Noah Baumbach. While having shown his acting potential, it was no wonder that he was chosen for a role in the new Safdie Brothers’ film. The trailer for Uncut Gems just went online and proves that Sandler is experimenting.

Directed by Josh Safdie and Benny Safdie (Safdie brothers), ‘Uncut Gems’ looks aesthetically similar to their previous film ‘Good Times‘. With the heavy usage of neon lights and particularly grainy compositions, they seem to have refined their own style. And there’s a refreshing amount of energy apparent in the trailer itself. While having worked in the genre of crime thriller before, Sandler appears to be an oddly satisfying choice in this director duo’s film.

‘Uncut Gems’ had its World Premiere at Telluride Film Festival and the film was also a part of this year’s Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF). We meet Howard Ratner, a jewelry store owner & gambler played by Sandler himself. And looking at the trailer, his weird antics seem to work like a charm for his charismatic character. For his ultimate goal, this New York-based gambler must go to any lengths necessary. The high stakes are precisely shown yet not revealed in the trailer.

With a studio like A24 backing it up, the film is creating quite a buzz in the festival circuit. Besides Sandler, ‘Uncut Gems’ also features Lakeith Stanfield, The Weeknd (Singer-songwriter), Kevin Garnett (NBA Player), Idina Menzel, Judd Hirsch & Eric Bogosian.
