The Malayali moviegoers had a ball in 2019. Some of the Best Indian movies of 2019 actually came from the south –  especially the Malayalam Movie Industry. The industry also had a huge makeover. The films that actually fared well – both at the box office and critically did not feature any major stars. This is actually a fair sign that at least one of the film industry in the country is trying to rewire the game of cinematic expression. The Malayalam new wave featured some of the most talked-about performances, some of the crispest and intelligent writing and production that could put the big guns to shame. Malayalam cinema is responsible for changing the trajectory of an alpha male’s portrayal on-screen. Thanks to the many streaming platforms these wonderful films are now available for everyone. There’s no second say that Malayalam Movies of 2019 were the most audacious. From shattering patriarchy and masculinity to the ground, the list consists of both – small and popular Malayalam Movies that changed the entire spectrum in 2019. However, this doesn’t automatically mean that the films on this list are a direct recommendation. All the Malayalam movies of 2019 on the list have HD versions and can be both streamed and downloaded online.

1. Kumbalangi Nights

Directed by first-timer Madhu C. Narayanan, this little film starred Shane Nigam, Soubin Shahir, and Sreenath Bhasi in the lead roles. Set in the fishing village of Kumbalangi, the movie told the bittersweet tale of four brothers living together in a dysfunctional home. The small-scaled film encompassed a lot of themes, especially its takedown of the masculine men tailor-made for south films. Featuring a bone-tingling climax with one of Fahad Fassil’s most insane performances ever, this critically acclaimed film was among the finest Malayalam and Indian Movies of 2019.

2. Uyare

Directed by Manu Ashokan and starring the dependable Parvathy Thiruvothu along with Asif Ali and Tovino Thomas, ‘Uyare’  is the tale of Pallavi – an acid-attack survivor whose aviation career is jeopardized by the event that changed her life. This is a sensitive film about the life of acid-survivors and how their life doesn’t necessarily need to change because someone wasn’t able to face their ambitions. Featuring a dedicated performance by Parvathy, the film uses its commercial elements to fly an important message across.

3. Unda

It is difficult to put a restraint on the commercial appeal of one of the biggest Malayalam Movies star Mammootty – but the 2019 film ‘Unda’ managed to balance it quite brilliantly. Directed by Khalid Rahman and based on a true story that happened during the 2014 Lok Sabha Election, the film follows a nine-men police unit of the Kerala police headed by Sub-inspector Manikandan C. P. (Mammootty) as they are sent to the Maoist affected area of Chhattisgarh on Election duty. The biggest flipside for them is to do what they are supposed to with a limited supply of only 8-bullets in hand.

4. Ishq

The way I see it, Ishq is a great film about the bruised ego of men in Indian society. It carefully constructs a horrific incident that features a sinister prowler who changes the dynamics of a young couple’s life. Only to investigate a more superior theme of masculinity under the thick skull of gentlemen. Featuring a fantastic villainous turn by Shine Tom Chacko, this Ratheesh Ravi directorial venture is one of the most satisfying Malayalam Movies of 2019.

In the lights of the Corona pandemic that sent everyone into self-isolation, Aashiq Abu’s ‘Virus’ became one of the most important movies about disease outbreak. Set in the backdrop of the 2018 Nipah virus outbreak in Kerala, Virus is a medical thriller like no other. Featuring an ensemble of some of the most reverend Malayali actors, the film paved way for an urgent messaging for people playing with the fatal consequences of taking an unwanted entity for granted.

6. Android Kunjappan Version 5.25

A Malayalam-language sci-fi comedy sounds like a peculiar phenomenon. However, debutant director Ratheesh Balakrishnan Poduval pulls it off with oodles of charm and sweetness. In a unique spin of placing a robot as the nurse for his aging father, the story tells the need for extra care and affection for the elderly from their closest accomplices. It’s a beautiful tale about a father-son relationship told with a dash of humor.

7. Jallikattu

Narrative wise, there’s not much to say about Lijo Jose Pellissery’s ‘Jallikattu.’ It’s about a buffalo escaping from a slaughterhouse and the chaos it reigns over the town it is about. Arguably one of the most technically sounds India film of 2019, Jallikattu raised the bar high for contemporary Malayalam Movies of 2019. With its stark metaphors of the fragility of masculinity and the consequences it can have over everyone around, this is a precisely shot wonder by one of the most audacious Asian filmmakers of the century.

8. Helen

Mathukutty Xavier’s ‘Helen’ is a survival thriller set in a restaurant inside a mall. Much like, Vikramaditya Motwane’s ‘Trapped‘ – A survival thriller set in the midst of the bustle of Mumbai city, Helen stars Malayali heartthrob Anna Ben in the titular role.  It’s hard to maintain the tension in a survival thriller, throughout the runtime, but Xavier somehow balances it with banter that only gets aggressively tense as the film goes on.

9. Prathi Poovankozhi

Directed by Rosshan Andrrews and starring the undefinable Manju Warrier in another angry avatar, Prathi Poovankozhi is about a woman’s journey to give it back to a man who molested her on her way to work. The film does indulge in some missteps as the tale is further stretched from being a revenge subplot to something totally different but it comes back full circle with a grand performance by Warrier.

10. Thottappan

Much like it’s Tamilian counterpart “Super Deluxe,” Shanavas K Bavakutty’s “Thottappan” is about a bunch of characters. While it struggles to keep track of every strand it opens up, it is Vinayakan’s wonderful performance that salvages this effort that sounds incredible on-page.
